Paper magazine has seen its fair share of rappers gracing its cover for the past few years, including Drake, Pharrell, Lil Yachty and Kanye West.
For his cover story opportunity, however, South Bronx emcee French Montana took time out to share criticism of his fellow unnamed rap counterparts and their personal choices to exclude features on their albums.
French arrived on the topic with regard to his most recent release: JungleRules. According to Paper, Jay-Z rang him up to laud one of the album’s tracks, “Famous,” which includes a solo French spitting on the single without any features. While a few featureless songs are OK in his eyes, completing a full album without assistance apparently is not.
"Who sits there thinking about weird shit like [going platinum with no features]?" he said.
The Coke Boys founder, whose current studio albums have yet to reach platinum status, boasts names like Quavo, Max B, Futureand T.I. on Jungle Rules. He doesn’t specifically point a finger at those who have effortlessly achieved such a feat, like J. Cole, but it doesn’t take much to decode the thinly veiled reference, anyway.
"Those people who put albums out by themselves are weirdos. Music is about having fun. If I'm chilling with A$AP Rocky, or chilling with Drake or The Weeknd and we record, and then I have to say, 'Look here, bro, I'm thinking about dropping this album just by myself.'
Artists would stop f**king with you.
"Unfortunately, French’s theory checks out false, and Cole happens to be living proof of that. Since the release of his first platinum-with-no-features deed, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Joey Bada$$, Logic, Jeremih, and even the legendary Janet Jackson have tapped the Fayetteville emcee for assists on their respective projects as well.
And not to mention Compton’s rap prophet Kendrick Lamar also grabbed him for a stage assist during a DAMN. tour pit stop while completing an entire album beside Cole.
If that’s the definition of “weirdo” status, where do we sign up?
